The Minimalist Guide to Physical Fitness

Life is too Complex

The simplest game ever created is tic tac toe.
Simplest game ever: Tic Tac Toe
I believe life is too complicated. Things that should be simple are made overly-difficult because everyone is looking for the bigger better way of doing things. Something that can be done in one step is surely inferior to a process where the same thing is accomplished in five. This drives me insane. Everything from our overly-complicated tax system clear down to physical fitness. I could write letters and rally protests to try and change the tax system, with little or nothing to show for it. Or I could have a bigger impact by cutting out all the crap and creating a straight-forward weight loss program.

Give me a few minutes and review what I have to offer. I am not selling anything. No where on my site will you find a place to enter your credit card. I plug products, people, or services here and there, but only things I have personally tried and can vouch for (no, I do not get paid for these plugs). I am battling a billion dollar industry, that insists the only way to be healthy is to eat these organic, green-drink, superfoods after you have detoxed, and can never have carbs/fat/protein unless it is the third Thursday of the months ending in 'y' during the full moon in the year of the rabbit. Seriously? Give it up.

The problem is that the truth is unsexy and there is not a lot of money in it. You don't need to breath through a tube, order a bunch of magazines, and buy a whole ton of pre-packaged food to lose weight. Yes, some of those things might help you get off of a plateau, but let's take this one step at a time. Most of the tools and methods I use are free and require a bit of discipline. Did I mention that I believe most things in life are too expensive too?

Quick and Easy Physical Fitness

TV is the best place to find a quick and easy path to physical fitness...Not!

Take this pill. Eat this food. Drink this green shake. Change one small thing and nothing else and lose tons of weight, have great abs, and become socially popular because of your increased confidence. Usually the one small thing is adding something to your diet, be it grapefruit, walnuts, blueberries, or peat moss. Do more eating and you will become physically fit and lose 20 pounds in just seven short days! Really? There isn't a week that goes by you don't see a magazine article about how Angelina lost 30 pounds on her new miracle diet and you can too!

Here is a news flash: Angelina has millions of dollars and a slew of personal trainers and dieticians at her beck and call. You will never be able to lose weight on her revolutionary diet. NEVER! There is no pill, no one food that will do the trick. So put down that phone, put away the credit card, do not call the 1-800 number for the 3 easy payments of $29.95 plus shipping and handling for the ab-o-lose-weight-in-3-days-meister.

No matter how many times you follow Charles Atlas’ guide to ‘Dud to Stud’ you aren’t going to become a muscle-bound behemoth in 2 weeks.

So, you can't become physically fit with a pill or a guide you found in a comic book. Obviously you have to change everything all at once to become physically fit, right?

Change Everything in Our Lives All At Once to Become Physically Fit Plan

Everything must change to become physically fit

Change Everything in Our Lives All At Once to Become Physically Fit Plan
Wrong! You cannot overhaul a lifetime of habits all at once. If you have always been a couch potato, eating corn dogs and chili fries, you cannot become a lettuce-gnawing, go to the gym 7 days a week, only eating organics and whole grain, in one swoop. Ain't gonna last. Eating chili fries is fun. Eating plain lettuce with vinegar is not. Watching the Biggest Loser on TV is fun. Actually doing their workout routines is not.

You can't lose weight and become physically fit with a pill and you can't become fit by changing everything at once. What is left?
The minimalist approach.

The Minimalist Approach to Physical Fitness

Keep your approach to physical fitness as simple as possible
Minimum approach to physical fitness
The idea is simple. Set yourself a fitness goal, say to lose 20 pounds and get your abs. Next create a plan. The plan is to change one or two things and measure the results. Are you making progress? If so, then keep doing what you are doing until you are no longer making progress. Then change something else. Measure your results. Making progress? Keep doing it until you no longer are.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat

Physical Fitness Reality Check!

Google Maps of Physical Fitness
Map to Physical Fitness
The problem with most fitness websites is they are not organized in a way that you know where to start and what to do next. Almost all sites jump right in and try to sell you their products and/or services, and are generally tailored to 'advanced' students who know what to look for when searching millions of blogs. They are listed as a fitness site, but are usually just thinly veiled marketing campaigns. This is why it is so difficult to find the information you need.

Personally, I love Google Maps. Why? Because you tell it where you are and it tells you exactly, turn by turn, how to get to your destination. Based on that model, the beginning of our road map is labeled 'Start Here'.

Shameless Plugging

I am a great believer in plugging for other people, companies, or products I have tried and approve of. You will see unabashed plugs for companies and products I have tried. These people/companies/products do not pay me to do it, hell some of them probably don't even know I do so. It is simple, I have tried them and know they deliver. I get paid through the Google ads banner at the top of each page. So if you like the site and want to see more, don't send me money, just link to it from your blog or site, recommend it to your friends, and click my banner ads!
